The Complete Cook Book: 750 Economical Recipes for Everyday Dishes, Jennie Day Rees, 1900, Street & Smith, 320pp plus index & endpage advertising, paperback.
Collectors of old-fashioned paperback volumes will admire this antique cookbook, complete with old-fashioned recipes peppered with poetry from an era whose political correctness was a far cry from that of the present day.
Recipes are narrated in paragraph format, and most presume a good knowledge of culinary basics. You'll find "My Mother's Stewed Squirrel", a dish of oysters wrapped in bacon called "Pigs in Blankets", a trick to make pie crust flaky, and "Peach Cobblers of a Hundred Years Ago" (for those who are nostalgic for the 1700s!)
A charming advertisement for Coca Cola is on the back cover.
In fair condition - which is actually remarkable for a century-plus "15-cent" paperback! Most of the first two-thirds of the book's pages are intact, though all throughout are present. Pages are very yellowed, brittle, and chipping on the edges, but fully readable. No handwriting can be found. Cover has been repaired with clear tape at the spine. No other repairs have been made.
